A Sense Able Story is a story designed to be experienced, not just read.
It blends words, sound, touch, movement and imagination into a single, gentle journey. Each story invites the reader to explore the world around them, gather simple materials, listen if they wish, and shape the story in their own way.
At its heart, a Sense Able Story is built on a simple idea:
Stories should adapt to people, not the other way around.
Why Sense Able Stories Were Developed
Many children’s books focus on sitting still, turning pages, and absorbing information in one fixed way. That works well for some children, but not for all.
Sense Able Stories were developed to:
Support different learning styles without labels.
Remove barriers without drawing attention to them.
Encourage curiosity, movement and calm engagement.
Offer accessibility that feels natural, not instructional.
Bring storytelling back into the real, physical world.
Rather than building accessibility on afterwards, the Sensory–Abling–Story (S.A.S.) framework builds it in from the very first page.
No child is told how they should experience the book. Every feature is optional. The story works whether it is read silently, read aloud, listened to, touched, coloured, explored outdoors, or simply enjoyed as a bedtime tale.
The S.A.S. Framework Explained
S is for Sensory
Each story suggests simple textures and materials that can be found almost anywhere. Pebbles, leaves, fabric scraps, sand, cotton, twigs and petals become part of the reading experience. These textures can be added to the book, felt in the hand, or simply talked about.
A is for Abling
Sense Able Stories are educational for everyone. They support exploration, observation, listening, reading and creativity, using whichever senses a reader prefers or is able to use. There is no single “right” way to engage.
S is for Story
At the centre of everything is a warm, rhythmic story led by a friendly guide. The story stands on its own in print, but is enhanced through optional audio narration, page guidance and songs accessed via QR codes.
Who Sense Able Stories Are For
Sense Able Stories are designed for every child, but they are especially valuable for:
Children aged roughly 3 to 9.
Neurodivergent children.
Children with sensory processing differences.
Children with visual, auditory or developmental impairments.
Reluctant or emerging readers.
Families who enjoy shared reading.
Educators, SEN departments and homeschooling families.
Crucially, no one is singled out. The design is inclusive by default, not by explanation.
What Kind of Stories to Expect
Each Sense Able Story follows the same calm, adaptable structure while telling very different tales. Some are rooted in real places, some drift into imagination, and some do both at once.
Across all stories, readers can expect:
Friendly guide characters.
Rhyming, reassuring language.
Optional audio and songs.
Suggested textures and activities.
Space for imagination and choice.
A sense of calm, curiosity and kindness.
Sense Able Story is not a single book, but a growing collection. As new adventures are added, readers can return to the same familiar framework while discovering new places, characters and ideas.
Below this post, you will find a gallery of the Sense Able Story books released so far, with more to come.
Each story stands alone. Together, they form a world where learning feels natural, stories feel safe, and every reader belongs.
