Lion Cub and the Gazelle

The Lion Cub and the Gazelle is a gentle children’s story about teasing, emotions, power and discovering what it really means to be strong.

Set within a school environment and told from the lion cub’s point of view, the story explores what happens when interactions with the gazelle leave him confused, uncertain and questioning how he should respond.

As the lion cub works through his feelings, he begins to understand that being powerful does not mean having to prove that power. Strength can also be found in patience, restraint, kindness and the choices we make when somebody else’s behaviour affects us.

Rather than presenting one character simply as the bully and another as the victim, the story gives children space to think about behaviour, feelings and consequences without immediately attaching labels or blame. Through the animal characters, difficult subjects such as teasing, frustration, self-control and conflict can be explored at a safe distance, allowing children to consider what they might feel or do in similar situations.

Part of the Sense-Able Story series, The Lion Cub and the Gazelle combines storytelling with sensory elements, narration and music, providing different ways for children to engage with the story and the emotions within it.

At its heart, the book asks a deceptively simple question:

If you have the power to hurt someone back, what does it mean when you choose not to?
