About the book

Texan Tortoise on the Moon is a humorous children’s space adventure about curiosity, problem-solving and discovering that you do not have to move quickly to go a very long way.

Texan is a tortoise.

He is thoughtful, practical and, as tortoises tend to be, not particularly fast.

But being slow has never stopped him from being curious.

With an interest in fixing rockets and understanding how things work, Texan finds himself caught up in a rather unexpected adventure that takes him far beyond where any sensible tortoise might normally expect to travel.

All the way into space.

As his unlikely journey unfolds, Texan approaches the strange new world around him in his own way. He does not suddenly become the fastest creature in the universe, nor does he need to. His patience, curiosity and willingness to keep going prove far more useful than rushing simply because everyone else expects things to happen quickly.

Through rockets, space, humour and an exceptionally unlikely astronaut, Texan Tortoise on the Moon gently challenges the idea that speed is the same thing as ability.

Part of the Sense-Able Story series, the book provides different ways for children to experience the adventure. Optional narration, music and sound can accompany the printed story, while materials such as foil, fabric, foam and sand can help turn ideas about rockets, space, surfaces and unfamiliar environments into things that can be touched, compared and explored.

The story can also provide a natural starting point for conversations and activities involving literacy, imagination, science, space, art and sensory exploration without turning the adventure itself into a worksheet.

Above all, Texan Tortoise on the Moon is a story about going somewhere extraordinary at your own pace.

Because you do not have to be fast to make progress.

And every now and then, even a tortoise can end up on the Moon.
